New Dangerous Goods Rules
The new ADR 2009 rules became effective on 1st. January 2009, however, a six-month implementation period is allowed. The introduction of ADR 2009 affects the way in which dangerous goods are transported in the UK. The main change is the responsibility for the provision of the Tremcard (Instruction in Writing). From 1st. July, this will become the responsibility of the haulier.
In order for Maritime Transport to assume responsibility for the provision of tremcards, customers will need to complete transport documents to include the information listed below. As soon as possible and at the latest, by 30th June 2009, transport document/DG notes must contain the following information for each dangerous goods substance, material or article for carriage:
a. UN number.
b. The proper shipping name.
c. Label model numbers.
d. Packing group.
e. Number and description of packages.
f. Total quantity of each item or dangerous goods carried.
g. Name and address of consignor.
h. Name and address of consignee.
i. A declaration (if required) by the terms of any special agreement.
j. Tunnel restriction code (Details: ADR 2009, Chapter 3.2. Table A, column 15).
Please note, that with the exception of ‘a’, ‘b’, ‘c’, ‘d’ and ‘j’ which must be listed in this sequence with no information interspersed as per the example below, it is not specified how the remaining information above should appear in the document.
Example: UN1098, ALLYL ALCOHOL, 6.1 (3), PG1 (C/D).
To recap, by law, from 1st. July 2009 customers will be required to complete documentation with the above information and Maritime will be bound to provide the tremcard.
We appreciate that customers may need time to implement the new requirements of ADR 2009, however, ultimately it should reduce the burden of paperwork required. Arrangements for Maritime drivers to carry a new Company-issued tremcard are now in place and responsibility can be transferred as soon as transport documentation is amended.
