Fuel protection for sub-contractors
Maritime Transport has introduced a pioneering fuel recovery system, to enable its sub-contractors to recover costs and protect their profits from movements in the price of diesel. The move coincides with the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s recent 2 pence per litre increase in fuel duty.
“As a large fleet operator, we appreciate how fuel increases can affect our sub-contractors. Diesel prices have risen substantially in 2007 and are set to rise with further increases in fuel duty next year”, said Tom Cole, Sub-Contract Resource Manager at Maritime.
The scheme is based on the Road Haulage Association’s National Average Fuel Survey, published weekly and calculated monthly. RHA’s figures have been used because it provides an independent benchmark of fuel prices in the UK.
Furthermore, rather than taking the fuel price today, Maritime has set the starting point at an incredible 72 pence per litre, excluding other costs, such as handling and VAT.
When the price of fuel rises above the base price, Maritime’s sub-contractors will be paid a surcharge to offset the rise in costs.
“Our existing sub-contractors will benefit from at 3.39% fuel recovery during October and their recovery in November could be a high as 4%,” said Cole.
By introducing the new fuel recovery scheme, Maritime aims to protect one of the biggest components of cost for truck operators and to demonstrate the Company’s long-term undertaking to its sub-contractors. “At Maritime, sub-contractors can enjoy continuous work, recover their fuel costs and safeguard their future profits,” said Cole. “The best sub-contractor deal is now ‘fuel-proof ‘.”
