| Dangerous Goods | Goods considered to cause harm or risk to people, the environment, equipment or any property whatsoever whilst in transit. |
| Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor | Individual trained and qualified to monitor safety compliance within dangerous goods regulations and a legal requirement for every company imvolved in the carriage of dangerous goods by road. |
| Daventry International Railfreight Terminal | A rail port and logistics centre located near Rugby, Warwickshire and Crick, Northamptonshire. Abbreviated: DIRFT. |
| Day Cab | A goods vehicle designed for day work only. |
| DC | See 'Distribution Centre' |
| Delivery Note | A document recording the delivery of goods to a consignee (receiver). |
| Demurrage | Costs incurred for any additional time at the loading or unloading point after the agreed free-time. |
| Department for Transport | Government department with responsibility for all transport issues in the UK. |
| Depot | The place designated by the carrier where empty containers are kept in stock and received from or delivered to container operators or merchants. |

| Digital Tachograph | Electronic tachograph that records the drivers' activity and hours in the vehicle. The data is stored on a memory and can be read electronically. |
| DIRFT | See 'Daventry International Railfreight Terminal' |
| Distribution Centre | A warehouse for the receipt, the storage and the delivery of goods to customers. |
| Door-to-Door Transport | Transport of goods from the shipper's premises to the receiver's premises, usually involving ocean and inland transport legs. |
| Draw-bar Trailer | A trailer towed by a rigid vehicle, where both the trailer and vehicle can carry a 20' container. |
| Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority | UK Government agency responsible for vehicle excise and issue of driving licences. Abbreviated: DVLA. |
| Drop & Swap | The process of replacing trailer carrying a container that has been emptied with a trailer carrying a loaded container at a receiver's premises, to facilitate unloading. |
| Dry Bulk Container | Freight container consisting of a cargo-carrying structure, firmly secured within a framework, for the carriage of dry solids in bulk without packaging. |
| Dry Van Container | A general purpose freight container for carrying dry goods that do not require special temperatures. |
